Dr. Tom and Mrs. Karen Cowley shared their experiences in raising a Christian family recently at a Faith & Family seminar in New York. Mrs. Cowley shared from Charles Stanley’s “Family Principles”, and Dr. Cowley presented key thoughts from the acrostic “P.E.N.C.I.L.”
Mrs. Cowley emphasized the importance of investing time in raising children, encouraging them, and teaching them to love God. In our modern world, everyone is busy. This makes it more important for us to use the time we have together effectively. And it is especially important that children learn faith from our example and everyday life. Mrs. Cowley added her own addition to the original list that Stanley made, which was to “choose joy, have fun!” Our families are meant to be a joy and blessing to us, and we should enjoy watching our children grow up in the love of God. Every attendant received a bookmark reminding them to love and enjoy their families.
As he passed out pencils, Dr. Cowley spelled out the acrostic “P.E.N.C.I.L.” This stands for “Prepare with Prayer,” “Eternal Life as Comfort in Death,” “Now Live as Servants,” “Communion as New Covenant,” “Intimacy with God through the Spirit,” and “Love.” Dr. Cowley encouraged all to live Scripturally-guided lives, and to love Jesus before anyone else.
The seminar concluded with a family portrait session, as a keepsake for the special time spent together in strengthening marriages.
